The best track and field athletes from the Big Country and West Texas are heading to Austin to compete in the 2025 UIL State Track and Field Meet.

The UIL State Meet will kick off Thursday, May 1, and wrap up Saturday, May 3, at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin.

Here are the Big Country’s top 2A and 5A storylines to watch on Day 2 of the UIL State Track and Field Meet:

Bangs’ Kasey Solis set to compete in four events

Few athletes will be positioned to make as much noise as Bangs senior Kasey Solis during Day 2 of the UIL State Track and Field Meet.

Solis will be participating in four separate events at the state meet, leading all Big Country state qualifiers. She will compete in the 2A girls long jump and triple jump, as well as the Dragons’ 4x100- and 4x200-meter relay teams.

Solis helped the Bangs’ 4x100- and 4x200-meter relay teams advance to the state meet by earning third-place finishes at the Region I-2A meet.

The Dragons' 4x100 relay team clocked in at 50.19 seconds, and their 4x200 relay team finished with a time of 1 minutes, 47.01 seconds, with both securing wild card spots to advance to state as the fastest third-place finishers during the regional meets.

While Bangs’ relay teams should be poised to contend for spots on the podium, Solis will have golden opportunities to medal in the long jump and triple jump, too.

The Dragons’ senior took home first place in the long jump at the Region I-2A meet after setting a new personal record with an 18-foot, 6.75-inch leap, which broke her previous PR by nearly a foot. That mark ranks first among all state qualifiers set to compete in the 2A girls long jump, giving her a 3-inch advantage over her next closest competitor entering the competition.

Solis is also one of four state qualifiers in the 2A girls triple jump who cleared at least 37 feet during their regional meet performances.

Solis secured her spot at the state meet when she leaped 37 feet, 1.5 inches in the triple jump during the regional meet, smashing her previous PR by 17 inches. She will be well positioned to fight for a spot on the podium in the triple jump, too, if she replicates her success from the regional meet.

Abilene Wylie’s Andre Washington PRs to reach state in triple jump

Abilene Wylie senior Andre Washington will be the Big Country’s lone 5A competitor at the UIL State Track and Field meet after a recent hot streak propelled him to the state meet.

Washington, who will represent Wylie in the 5A boys triple jump, has been one of the Bulldogs’ top track and field athletes this year after posting strong performances in the long jump, triple jump, 400-meter dash and 4x400-meter relay.

The standout senior has reached the podium in all four of his regular events multiple times this season, but his most impressive performances have come in the triple jump in recent weeks.

Washington narrowly missed out on qualifying for the state meet as a junior after a fifth-place finish at last year’s Region I-5A meet.

Washington, though, has responded with a dominant senior campaign. He has captured a gold or silver medal in the triple jump at every meet in which he’s competed so far this year, including a first-place finish at the area meet and second-place finishes at Wylie’s district and regional meets.

Washington won gold at the area meet when he set a new personal record with a 46-foot, 1.75-inch leap in the triple jump. Then he set another PR with a 46-foot, 10.5-inch jump at the regional meet and took home a silver medal.

His state-qualifying jump ranks seventh among the nine athletes set to compete in the 5A boys triple jump at the UIL state meet, but expect Washington to contend for a medal if he can keep building on his recent strong showings.

Jayla Pittman leads strong Cisco contingent to state

The Cisco Loboes will be one of the busiest track and field teams from anywhere in the Lone Star State during Day 2 of the UIL state meet. The Loboes lead all Big Country schools with state qualifiers competing in eight different events Friday.

Leading the way for Cisco will be talented sophomore Jayla Pittman, who will be competing in four separate events for the Loboes: the high jump, 100-meter hurdles, the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x200-meter relay.

Pittman should be primed to contend for a first-place finish in the 2A girls high jump after she reached state by setting a PR at the regional meet with a 5-foot, 4-inch clearance that earned her a bronze medal and a wild-card selection for the state meet.

She also took home a silver medal in the 100-meter hurdles at the regional meet, clocking in at 16.70 seconds. If she can match or beat her PR from the area meet (16.43), then she could position herself to reach the podium again.

The Loboes as a group should be neck-and-neck racing against Bangs for spots on the podium in the 2A girls relay races, too.

Additionally, junior Pearson Hearne should be a prime contender for a medal in the 2A girls 300-meter hurdles as well. If she can shave 0.8 seconds off her qualifying time, she will also break Cisco’s all-time school record in the event.

Lola Hart will be one of the top contenders in the girls 800-meter run for the Loboes, and on the boys' side, expect senior Jaden White to take home a medal in the 2A boys long jump if he can improve upon his qualifying clearance of 45-feet, 6.50-inches.
