BERLIN — Senior captain Mercy Sechler scored a game-high 22 points to lift top seed Berlin Brothersvalley past fifth-seeded Tussey Mountain 61-33 in a District 5-2A girls basketball semifinal, Thursday, Feb. 19.

"It felt really amazing just to be playing a game in this gym my final time and being able to play with these amazing girls," said Sechler. "We have such great chemistry, and that is what carried us to our victory tonight. We play together and we win together."

The victory secured Berlin's fifth straight season with at least 20 wins.

Berlin added to its lead in the second. Sechler and Sam Walker each netted seven points in the frame. Walker, who stepped into a starting role this season, notched 14 points in the contest.

"We came out and had fun in our last game at home," Walker said. "We scored and used our teammates as best as we could, just trying to make something happen."

Despite a 7-0 Tussey Mountain (13-11) spurt, Berlin held a 37-14 advantage at the break.

Four different Mountaineers scored in the third quarter, dominated by Berlin. A 10-0 run propelled the Mountaineers a 47-16 lead, including six points from junior Coral Prosser, who finished with nine in the contest.

The Mountaineers seek their fourth straight District 5 championship. Berlin won two consecutive D5-1A crowns before capturing a District 5-2A title in route to PIAA gold last season.

Berlin meets No. 2 seed Everett, a 65-59 victor over Windber, for the title, Wednesday, Feb. 25, at UPJ. The Mountaineers routed the Warriors 68-35 in the Inter-County Conference semifinals, Friday, Feb. 13. Sechler is looking forward to the matchup.

"They are a good team. I am confident in winning another District 5 title, and I am excited to play them," Sechler said. "I know it is going to be a good game, but I know we will come out on top."
