Tuesday marks the NFL-wide deadline for franchise and transition tags.

That puts the Cincinnati Bengals and Trey Hendrickson on the clock.

All prior recent signs have pointed to the Bengals not applying the $30.2 million tag to their All-Pro edge rusher, though. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided a similar update on Tuesday morning.

“Would be a little surprise if it’s the tag,” Rapoport said. “But crazier things have happened, so we’ll see.”

There were some small rumblings over the last month that the Bengals might attempt a tag-and-trade scenario with Hendrickson.

But those rumblings came with a big catch: Duke Tobin and the Bengals wanted to get a feel for Hendrickson’s value around the NFL at the scouting combine first.

Exiting the combine, it would appear they didn’t like what they saw. Makes sense: Hendrickson is over the age of 30, coming off an injury and wants a big contract. Other teams also know the divorce could get ugly, giving them the leverage in any trade talks.

Barring a stunner before free agency opens, Hendrickson and the Bengals will officially split soon.
