The Cincinnati Bengals took some mild heat this offseason when they let Trey Hendrickson get away. It ramped up a little once he signed with the Baltimore Ravens, too.
But said heat cooled drastically as the Bengals progressed through their all-in offseason, especially once they traded the 10th overall pick for Dexter Lawrence.
Those Bengals, of course, are banking on young talent on the edge to blossom alongside Lawrence, so it makes sense that they wouldn’t pop up on the annual top 10 list at ESPN from the likes of Jeremy Fowler.
As for Hendrickson? He doesn’t crack the top 10 on the list either, only falling under an “honorable mention” category.
An NFL personnel evaluator wrote this about Hendrickson: "He's been a great performer but doesn't have the dominant traits as some of the others, so when age and injuries pile up, it's harder for him to stay toward the top."
Fair enough there, as Henrickson dealt with nagging back issues at times over the last few years before only appearing in seven games last season at the age of 31. That didn’t stop the Ravens from giving him a four-year, $112 million contract.
In time, the Bengals hope that the likes of Myles Murphy and Shemar Stewart might be able to crack lists like this. If free-agent signee Boye Mafe ascends like they think upon arrival, perhaps he has a shot right away.
Regardless, early returns, at least for now, say the Bengals got it right with the Hendrickson decision.
