SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Benedictine made its sixth straight state tournament with a win in the first round of the Region 1-AAAA tournament. Several other teams advanced on Monday.
In Wayne County, the Yellowjackets cruised to a round-one victory with a 61-41 win over Perry.
Head Coach Jamey Knight says it came down to his team executing the gameplan.
“We’re limiting turnovers and that’s going in our favor,” said Knight. “We’re shooting well, getting more rebounds, and playing better defense. We are trying to keep that energy moving in the same direction.”
Also at Wayne County, the No. 5 seed in the Region 1-AAAA tournament, Benedictine boys’ basketball, upset the No. 4 seed, New Hampstead, 46-36.
In Region 3-AAA, the opening round games did not produce any upsets.
On the girls’ side, Calvary Day defeated Southeast Bulloch, 50-18. Calvary Day will take on the top seed from sub-region A, Liberty County, on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Long County.
The Windsor Forest girls also keep their season alive. They took care of business against Islands, 52-17. The Lady Knights will play the top seed from sub-region B, Jenkins, on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Calvary Day.
On the boys’ side, Groves defeated Johnson, 59-51. Johnson had several chances late, but could not get a shot to drop late in the fourth quarter.
“Like I told the guys, ‘It’s been a tough year,'” Groves head coach Kevin Evans said. We are 0-0. It’s one win at a time. The regular season doesn’t matter at this point. The record doesn’t matter at this point. It’s about what you do in each remaining game. It’s going to be a tough test tomorrow against Calvary [Day], but we are going to be ready to play.”
The game between Groves and Calvary Day will take place on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Calvary Day.
In the other boys’ game, Islands punched its ticket to the quarterfinal round. The Sharks defeated Southeast Bulloch, 62-46. Islands travels to Long County on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a spot in the state tournament.
