ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – When the dam finally broke, the Yankees had sent 10 batters to the plate in Thursday afternoon’s third inning.

They pushed across six runs in that frame and knocked out Rays right-hander Drew Rasmussen – who owned a 0.89 career ERA in nine previous career appearances against the Yanks.

Ben Rice belted a two-run homer in the third and followed that with a three-run shot in the sixth – his fourth homer of an important series at Tropicana Field.

Employing a bullpen game of seven pitchers, the Yankees stitched together a 12-4 win against the AL East-leading Rays, cutting their lead to four games and earning a split of a four-game set.

Entering Thursday afternoon’s game, the Yanks had averaged 2.8 runs per game in 20 games since June 18, losing 15 of 20 in that span.

By the ninth inning Thursday, they were taking hacks against a Rays infielder, Ben Williamson, who somehow delivered a 1-2-3 inning while throwing 44-mph floaters.

A key at-bat in the Yanks' six-run frame was Ryan McMahon's 12-pitch at-bat, resulting in an RBI double after Max Schuemann's leadoff double.

McMahon fouled off seven pitches in the at-bat, including five straight, before lashing a double to right - the second of seven Yankee hits in the frame.
