For as long as I could remember, which has been since 2006 when I first started watching the Chicago Bears, the conversation always revolved around the defense, and it seems that with the core of Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman, and so on, the Bears defense would be at the top.
But never was it about the offense; I mean, if not for Devin Hester, who made special teams a place he could impact the game, who knows where the Bears would have been from 2006 through 2013. Chicago had subpar quarterback play, drafting a guy early, never being able to develop them, trading for a big name, and only getting them so far.
It happened with Rex Grossman, then the Jay Cutler era came and went. Mitch Trubisky never got a second contract extension, and neither did Justin Fields, but many, hopefully many, believe Caleb Williams is the guy.
So it's quite the culture shock to find the Bears among the best offenses in the NFL just several years removed with head coach Ben Johnson leading the charge and a franchise quarterback finally in place with Caleb Williams. CBS Sports' Jared Dubin named the Bears the No. 2 best foundation in the NFL, only trailing the heavy Super Bowl favorites, Los Angeles Rams, heading into 2026.
Chicago, a year ago, was the laughing stock of the league, blew games in ways it might have never even thought were possible, lacked leadership and discipline, and their offensive coordinator for No. 1 overall pick Williams didn’t even watch tape with him.
Jared Dubin said Johnson is one of the offensive minds in the game — the passing-catching groups have depth; offensive line play is above average and, in fact, top five. And Williams is emerging himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the game.
The storylines now surrounding the Bears are only thoughts the fanbase could dream of, and to even be in that company shows the change the franchise has undergone, from simply just two men who learned to make each other better.
