The Chicago Bears prioritized improving the offensive line this offseason after quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked a league-high 68 sacks during his rookie season.
When Ben Johnson was hired as head coach, there was a clear emphasis on overhauling the interior offensive line with the trades for guards Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson and free-agent signing of center Drew Dalman. The Bears appear set at tackle with Darnell Wright and Braxton Jones, although there could be an opportunity to add at that position.
Whether that's finding a replacement for Jones, who's entering a contract year and coming off a broken fibula, or even moving Wright to left tackle, there are options to upgrade on the outside. As far as the possibility of Wright moving from right tackle to left tackle, Poles didn't exactly rule it out.
“Yeah, I think that is a conversation we’ll see how everything goes," Poles told reporters Tuesday. "He clearly has the ability to play left and right. We saw that in college. That was part of the value in taking Darnell, so if he had to play left, he can play left, and obviously I think we are all excited about his stuff to go right.”
Wright was asked about a potential switch to left tackle at the start of the offseason program, and he had a hilarious response to reporters.
"Well, they said I was going over to quarterback," Wright joked.
While Wright won't be making the switch to quarterback, Poles did leave the door open for a potential move to left tackle. But that all depends on how the 2025 NFL draft unfolds, where Chicago will most likely be looking to add to that offensive line room. Wright has excelled at right tackle in his first two seasons, and it would be a lot to ask him to change now. But that's ultimately up to the coaches. Stay tuned.
