The MPSSAA state playoffs are in full swing in the world of Maryland high school baseball, softball and lacrosse. Regional champions have been crowned, and now the elite of the elite compete for the chance at winning a state championship.
A group of teams from the Bayside South are among those elite squads searching for a state title, as they've each managed to keep their seasons alive. And now they look ahead to what's next in their respective state playoff brackets.
Here is a roundup of where things stand for the remaining Bayside South baseball, softball and lacrosse teams in the MPSSAA playoffs:
The state semifinals for Maryland high school lacrosse are set to take place this weekend. And those games will feature two teams from Stephen Decatur High School, as both their boys and girls teams advanced to the Class 2A lacrosse final four.
Decatur's girls lacrosse team is the No. 1 seed in Class 2A, and earned the right to play at home in its state quarterfinal game against Northern on Wednesday. Decatur won easily, defeating Northern 21-3 to advance to the state semifinals this weekend.
The boys lacrosse team for the Decatur Seahawks is looking to make it back to the state championship game they appeared in last season. And they made another step towards that goal in their state quarterfinal victory on Wednesday. Decatur, the No. 5 seed in Class 3A, had to go on the road to face Centennial on Wednesday, winning 9-2.
Both Decatur squads will take part in a state semifinal doubleheader on Friday at Glen Burnie High School. The girls team will play the first game at 5 p.m., and they will face Centennial. Decatur's boys team will follow with their semifinal game against Huntingtown.
There are two Bayside South teams remaining in the MPSSAA baseball state playoffs. And given how successful they were in the regular season, it comes as no surprise that those two teams are Stephen Decatur and Mardela.
The Bayside Champion Decatur Seahawks remain undefeated after beating Northern 8-2 this week to clinch the Class 3A East II Regional Championship. Decatur is the No. 1 overall seed in Class 3A, and will host Towson on Friday in the state quarterfinals.
Joining them in the state quarterfinals are the Mardela Warriors, who earned the Class 1A East II Regional title with a 10-5 victory over Bayside South rival Snow Hill this week. Mardela will be on the road in the state quarterfinals, as they travel to face Patuxent on Friday.
The Mardela Warriors went to College Park last season and came back with a Class 1A softball state championship. As thing stand, they are still alive in their bid to repeat as state champions.
Undefeated this season, Mardela beat Pocomoke 13-0 on Wednesday to clinch the 1A East II Regional Championship. They'll advance to the 1A state quarterfinals, with the date, location and opponent TBA.
Stephen Decatur's softball team also featured in a regional championship game of its own Wednesday, but the Seahawks lost 12-5 on the road to Arundel, ending its season.
