Jun. 4—CEDARVILLE — Newton fought against Delphos St. John's in a Division VII regional final on Wednesday, but the Elwer brothers came up with too many key plays.
The Indians lost 3-0 to St. John's at Cedarville University and finish their dream season with a 23-5 record.
"This is the best team in school history for Newton baseball," coach Jordan Kopp said. "It's the farthest we've been. We didn't want it to end today, but give Delphos credit. They're really good."
Junior pitcher Cole Alexander pitched a complete game for the Indians. He gave up three earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight batters.
Andrew Elwer pitched a complete game for St. John's (19-7). Aside from earned runs, his stat line was the same: six hits, two walks, eight strikeouts.
"We played good, we hit the ball fairly good, but didn't get too many timely hits," Kopp said. "... Our guys, they competed. That's what we want out of them, and they did that all year. Just really proud of those guys.
"... Cole was really good. His composure is so good. He doesn't back down from anything."
St. John's didn't have a hit until the fourth, when it strung a few together.
Tyce McClain led the top of the fourth with an infield single on a grounder, then Cam Elwer hit a fly ball to right field that senior Austin Tippie just missed. The triple drove in McClain, then Andrew Elwer hit an RBI triple to center to push the Blue Jay's lead to 2-0.
"That's a MAC school, and they swing like they're from the MAC," Kopp said. "They were really impressive."
St. John's final run came after Cam Elwer hit an RBI line-drive double to left with two outs in the seventh. The Blue Jays loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Alexander coaxed a fly out to end the threat.
The Indians' best chance came in the first. Rhett Koffer hit a one-out single to center field on a hard grounder. After stealing second, he tried to score when Will Bowset hit a line-drive single to center, but was thrown out.
"I thought they made a pretty good play," Kopp said. "Good field, good throw, good tag. Credit to them."
The Indians will lose six seniors to graduation, including Koffer and Tippie, who threw a gem in a regional semifinal win over Russia on Tuesday.
"Five of (the six seniors) start, and the impact they've had on this program has been a big one," Kopp said. "... Credit to all our guys. We've got 16 here today, and they poured everything they've got into this."
St. John's is one of four Midwest Athletic Conference teams to advance to regional finals. They're the only yet to earn a state berth, with St. Henry set to face Attica Seneca East in a D-VI regional final on Thursday. The Blue Jays finished third in regular season standings behind St. Henry and Coldwater, which tied for the title.
St. John's will face either Tiffin Calvert or Kidron Central Christian in a D-VII state semifinal on Friday, June 12 at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in Canton.
