Derick Cole’s 2-run single in the third inning blew the game wide open.

From that swing forward, there was little doubt about the outcome as Sequoyah rolled to a 10-0 victory over Wyandotte to open District 3A-6 play Monday at the Pope Athletic Complex.

Cole finished with 2 hits and 2 RBIs, while Ryder Smalley drove in a team-high 3 runs from the heart of the order. Jayse Miller also collected 2 hits, and the Eagles displayed patience at the plate with 6 walks while swiping 6 bases.

On the mound, Smalley was in command. The left-hander allowed just 1 hit over 5 shutout innings, striking out 5 and working around 4 walks.

Defensively, Sequoyah was flawless, committing no errors, with Parker Dowell handling a team-high 5 chances in the field.

The Bears managed just 1 hit — a second-inning single by Tayton Threet — while Avery Lofland added 2 stolen bases.

The Eagles [1-0, 1-0 District 3A-6] wasted no time manufacturing runs in the bottom of the first.

Miller singled and advanced to second on a passed ball before Lucas Howard reached on an error. Moments later, Miller scored on another passed ball as Howard stole second and moved to third, giving Sequoyah a 1-0 lead.

After Clayton Miller walked and stole second, Smalley grounded out to second, allowing Howard to cross and extend the advantage to 2-0.

Smalley backed that early cushion by retiring Wyandotte in order in the first and stranding a runner in the second after the Bears’ lone hit.

The game turned decisively in the bottom of the third.

Smalley worked a leadoff walk, and both he and Gunner Allison executed a double steal to put runners at second and third. After Whyatt Cates walked to load the bases, Cole delivered the game’s defining blow — a line-drive single to left that scored Allison and Smalley to push the lead to 4-0.

Later in the inning, Dowell singled to right, and a passed ball allowed Cates to score for a 5-0 margin. Howard then grounded into a fielder’s choice, but Cole crossed the plate to make it 6-0 before Wyandotte could escape the frame.

Meanwhile, Smalley worked out of minor trouble in the third and fourth, stranding multiple runners with strikeouts and steady defense behind him.

The Eagles closed the door in the fifth.

Cole walked to open the inning and stole second before advancing to third on a passed ball. A single by Witt Callery plated Cole to stretch the lead to 7-0.

After Dowell was hit by a pitch and Miller reached on an error, Howard singled to right, scoring Callery and making it 8-0. With runners still aboard, Smalley reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, allowing both Miller and Reed to score and cap the scoring at 10-0.

Smalley returned to the mound in the top half and set down the Bears in order, securing the run-rule victory.

Sequoyah will travel to Wyandotte at 5 p.m. Tuesday seeking a sweep.
