BERLIN — Elsie Barna is the lone senior on the Berlin Brothersvalley softball team. She was recognized ahead of the team's Inter-County Conference matchup against McConnellsburg, Friday, May 8.
On top of the Senior Day recognition, Barna was surprised with another honor. She was announced as the inaugural Berlin Brothersvalley softball Boosters scholarship award recipient, receiving $1,000.
"That was awesome. They definitely surprised me," said Barna. "I knew nothing about it. This makes me feel so honored. It makes me realize that everyone does care. There's so much going on behind the scenes. Everything is worth it, putting my time in. They have definitely helped me in more than one way. This is truly an amazing thing."

The goal of the boosters is to award the scholarship to a Berlin Brothersvalley senior softball player who is committed or signed to play softball collegiately. Barna signed a National Letter of Intent to attend and play at Edinboro University. She has been a key cog in the wheel since her freshman season for the Mountaineers.
"It is great playing softball at Berlin," Barna said. "We've gotten better every year as a team. A lot of that is because of the coaches. Not only are my teammates willing to put in the time and effort, but so are they. Everyone shows up, even when we have optional practices. Everyone wants to be there and be a part of this."
Barna has led by example throughout her career.
"Elsie embodies all of the qualities of a great softball player and teammate," Berlin Brothersvalley softball Boosters President Rocky Ritchey said during Barna's presentation. "She leads with a positive attitude, works hard every single day and always puts the team first. She shows dedication, determination, leadership and sportsmanship both on and off the field. She is dependable, encouraging to her teammates and someone younger players look up to as a role model."
Veteran Berlin Brothersvalley softball coach Brian Slope has seen Barna's impact on and off the diamond.
"You can say any positive adjective you want to about her as a softball player, but she a truly fantastic person, too," Slope said. "She is always helping out with youth league, giving her time to different organizations. She has been a leader her whole career on the softball team. I am happy for her success. I hate to see her leave, but she is going to great at the next level. Wherever she ends up in life, she is going to be fantastic."
