WEXFORD — North Allegheny High School played host to the PIAA Class 1A softball quarterfinal on Thursday. The Blue Devils battled Berlin Brothersvalley for the second straight year. After defeating the Mountaineers last year, the Blue Devils could not get it done two years in a row, falling 13-0 in six innings.
"It just wasn't our day. Not much went our way. Some days you have that and today was that for us," Cambridge Springs head coach Angie Mumford said "This is one game. One game doesn't define us."
Things started awry when Berlin Brothersvalley scored with two outs on the board. The play was a wild one, as the Mountaineers' Elena Ritchey stole second and third on a wild pitch, before stealing home on an error from Morgan Dunton.
The next five innings were a defensive battle. Four of them went three up and three down, before the Mountaineers got going in the top of the fourth.
With two outs on the board and a runner on first and second, Audra Handke singled to third, bringing in Bena Barna for Berlin Brothersvalley.
On the next pitch, Madison Will singled, bringing in two, to extend the Mountaineers' lead to 4-0 at the top of the fourth.
Berlin Brothersvalley scored again in the fifth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly.
During the game, the balls were bouncing away from the Blue Devils. Every ball seemed to bounce, or curve just enough to cause Cambridge Springs to error. In total, the Blue Devils had five errors.
Down 5-0, Cambridge Springs got their first hit off on Berlin Brothersvalley pitcher Elena Ritchey. Jada Murawski singled a line drive to second base to get the hit. The Blue Devils could not capitalize on the hit, as they grounded out on the next at-bat to end the inning.
Going into the sixth inning the score was not insurmountable for Cambridge Springs. The Blue Devils showed flashes of their regular selves throughout the game and after getting their first hit, there was hope momentum might swing to them.
After starting the inning with a ground out, the momentum titled hard towards Berlin Brothersvalley.
First, Handke doubled, before Will was walked. An error got Coral Prosser to first, making the Blue Devils defend a bases load scenario.
Sam Walker singled for the Mountaineers, bringing home Handke and Will, allowing Prosser to get to third, making it 7-0 for Berlin Brothersvalley.
The Mountaineers continued to score, adding six more runs, totaling eight in the inning. And bringing their lead to 13-0.
Cambridge Springs did not go down without a fight in the bottom of the sixth. Quinn Eaglen got to first, thanks to an error by the Mountaineers' Callie Ritchey. Angela Hassinger then doubled for the Blue Devils, putting herself and Eaglen in scoring position.
With two outs on the board, Cambridge Springs could not bring home Eaglen, or Hassinger on a ground out to end its season.
Despite the loss, nothing can take away from the success the Blue Devils saw this year.
The team went 13-7 and captured its fourth-straight District 10 title. Through the four wins, four seniors were there though it all.
"Love 'em, gonna miss them," Mumford said. "They've given me everything they've have had all these years and they have so much to hold their head high about."
It was the final game for Kayla Crawford, Morgan Dunton, Quinn Eaglen and Jayden Simmons.
