The Wisconsin Badgers are hoping for a major turnaround in 2026 after encountering their worst season since 1991 last year. Wisconsin went just 4-8 last year, which included a six-game losing streak during the middle of the season, as its offense was ranked No. 122 in the FBS by SP+ last year.
Dealing with quarterback injuries once again, the Badgers ranked No. 134 in points per game and No. 135 in yards per game.
That led them to completely overhaul the offense this offseason. Wisconsin brought in Old Dominion transfer quarterback Colton Joseph, a trio of running backs, a brand new wide receiver room, two new tight ends, and a number of transfer offensive linemen.
Will that lead to a significant change for the Badgers on that side of the ball? ESPN’s SP+ doesn’t think so.
ESPN’s Bill Connelly shared his Big Ten preview, looking back at the 2025 season and sharing the SP+ projections for 2026. Overall, Wisconsin is projected as the No. 106 offense, which significantly contrasts from their defense’s projection at No. 22 in the country.
The No. 106 ranking is easily the worst projection in the Big Ten, with the second-lowest being the Purdue Boilermakers at No. 86.
Wisconsin had the worst offense in the Big Ten in 2025, ranking behind Purdue (No. 104) and UCLA (No. 106). Even with the overhaul this offseason, the Badgers aren’t projected to finish well once again, which would be a significant issue in Year 2 under Jeff Grimes.
Here’s where the Big Ten ranks defensively in the projections.
1. Oregon (No. 1 overall)
2. Ohio State (No. 2 overall)
3. USC (No. 6 overall)
4. Indiana (No. 9 overall)
5. Penn State (No. 14 overall)
6. Michigan (No. 20 overall)
7. Washington (No. 21 overall)
8. Illinois (No. 28 overall)
9. Rutgers (No. 37 overall)
10. Iowa (No. 38 overall)
11. Nebraska (No. 49 overall)
12. UCLA (No. 52 overall)
13. Michigan State (No. 61 overall)
14. Maryland (No. 65 overall)
15. Minnesota (No. 71 overall)
16. Northwestern (No. 78 overall)
17. Purdue (No. 86 overall)
