Review: 'Baby Driver' sets innovative heists to a winning beat
Ansel Elgort plays a talented getaway driver, Baby, who works for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey). But after meeting the woman of his dreams (Lily James) he sees a chance to ditch his shady lifestyle and make a clean break.

With his latest genre mashup Baby Driver, Edgar Wright ruins every exciting car trip around town you were ever going to take.

The skillfully crafted crime thriller (*** out of four; rated R; in theaters nationwide Wednesday) breaks away from the British writer/director’s usual comedic roots and unleashes exhilarating car chases and gun fights fueled by catchy songs that are just as important to the plot as the characters themselves.

Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Jon Bernthal and Eiza Gonzalez star alongside Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx.

From an original script by Wright, the story follows a talented getaway driver (Elgort) who decides to leave his life of crime behind when meeting the girl of his dreams (James). But a crooked crime boss (Spacey) makes those plans impossible

I thought this was a kids movie about a baby driver.

This still seems much better

I had a bad feeling about this five minutes in... that this was going to be the trendy hipster movie of the summer. I was wrong. It's definitely different from the franchise overload that's come and yet to come this summer, but it's really entertaining.

Great action, interesting characters, awesome sound track with a couple narrative surprises.

Dug it a lot.

When I saw the movie title, I couldn't help but think of the Simon And Garfunkel song, "Baby Driver."

Consider “Baby Driver,” which took in about $21 million over the weekend, for a total of $30 million since its Wednesday opening. Directed and written by Edgar Wright and starring Ansel Elgort in the oh-so-cool title role, “Baby Driver” (Sony) had been expected by analysts to sell roughly $20 million in tickets over its first five days in theaters.

Why did it overperform?

In a sea of rote sequels, “Baby Driver,” about a kindhearted getaway driver with tinnitus and an ever-present iPod, gave ticket buyers something novel. Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at comScore, noted that critics gave “Baby Driver” near-universal raves, with many citing Mr. Wright’s unique cinematic voice.

Honestly it got a little silly/cliched for me at the end but the overall style, pacing and especially the music was very good.

I really enjoyed this film.

I did too. Saw it tonight and knew NOTHING about it. Just begged my kids to see anything other than Spiderman #692 or the hot steaming feces that is EVERY Transformer movie.

Very pleasantly surprised, even with a couple of plot holes. A little bit different, so anything unique AT ALL, that is actually good, I really support. It's not frigging "Citizen Kane" but a really good summer movie in a summer where I have been so underwhelmed by what is out.

I think the kid with the weird name might be a star in the making. I really liked how he played his role.

I am pretty sure that is the song they were playing at the end.

This is cool. Good music is never dated.

This song is currently being used in a commercial. It's sad many viewers will not know the source.

Been pimping this film ever since I first heard about it. Saw it tonight for the first of many times. Was not disappointed at all. Well done, Edgar Wright.

It's not frigging "Citizen Kane" but a really good summer movie.

lol, thats such a cliche saying.

Have you actually seen citizen Kane? Most people havent. Its miserably boring.

I guess it sounds better than "well its no American pie but..."
