LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Gavin Smith’s two home runs paved the way for the division-leading Lafayette Aviators as they edged the Johnstown Mill Rats 4-3 Tuesday night at Loeb Stadium.

Smith’s home runs came in the second and sixth innings, with the latter breaking a 3-all tie and setting the final.

Johnstown got a home run from Ty Marsh – a two-run blast – to open the scoring in the first. Smith replied in Lafayette’s half of the second with a two-run shot of his own to knot the score at 2-all with the Aviators taking the lead later in the frame as Drew Potts scored when Bo Caraway Jr. reached base on an error at third.

Johnstown (9-9) tied the game at 3-all in the top of the sixth as Jack Newman singled to right, plating Sergio DeCello.

Smith’s second home run came in the bottom of the frame off the Mill Rats’ Jonathan Stoeckle, who logged 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing just the run from Smith’s game-winner.

Johnstown starter Grayson Headon tossed 4 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on three hits.

Lafayette’s Smith and Kadyn Martinez each had two hits.
