The head coaches of Australia and New Zealand have said they would not stand in the way of any player defecting to another nation to take part in the Rugby League World Cup after their own countries pulled out of the tournament. Mal Meninga and Michael Maguire said they would not oppose members of their respective squads exploiting eligibility rules that would allow some to switch allegiance to the likes of Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Italy.
