Auburn's pursuit of a transfer guard will continue as an in-state target commits to an ACC program.
According to a report by Thomas Ashworth from AL.com, former Jax State guard Jaron Pierre is transferring to SMU while continuing to go through the NBA draft process. Pierre entered the transfer portal earlier this month and included Auburn in his top four along with SMU, Arkansas, and Ole Miss on April 11.
Pierre was heavily pursued out of the transfer portal after winning Player of the Year in Conference USA after his stellar season at Jax State. In 36 games, Pierre scored 21.6 points, hauled in 5.5 rebounds, and logged 3.8 assists per game. He also shot 42% from the field and 81% from the free throw line. Pierre and Kennesaw State's Adrian Wooley were in a tight race for the C-USA Player of the Year award and were both heavily pursued by Auburn in the transfer portal. However, both are now playing with ACC programs. Pierre has transferred to SMU, while Wooley announced his plans to transfer to Louisville earlier this month.
Auburn will look to the transfer portal to replace outgoing point guard Denver Jones, who scored 10.9 points last season for the Tigers. Tahaad Pettiford is the obvious choice to replace Jones in the starting role; however, he has entered his name into NBA draft consideration, so his return is uncertain. True freshman signees Kaden Magwood and Simon Walker could enter the mix for the starting role, but Auburn will look to add experienced players to its rotation while Magwood and Walker have the time to develop.
