Auburn football has added depth to its linebacker room with the commitment of former Hampton linebacker Michael Matthews-Canty from the transfer portal. Matthews-Canty is the 38th player to announce their intention to transfer to Auburn after 37 players announced their plans to depart Auburn for the transfer portal.
Linebacker was one of the few position groups not ravaged by the transfer portal or NFL draft, but adding an experienced linebacker will surely assist defensive coordinator DJ Durkin's quest to build the best defense in the SEC. Matthews-Canty made 102 tackles in two seasons at Hampton, with 3 1/2 sacks and 5 1/2 tackles for loss. He was responsible for creating 14 pressures in 2025, which ranked third among Hampton defenders, with eight resulting in quarterback hurries. He missed just 13 tackles in 724 snaps.
Matthews-Canty joins a room loaded with returning talent, including Elijah Melendez, Bryce Deas, Demarcus Reddick, and Xavier Atkins. The quartet combined to make 138 tackles, 11 sacks, and four turnovers. The good news is that Auburn can now match the production it lost in Robert Woodyard, who recently transferred to Missouri. Woodyard was second on the team in tackles with 67, and was one of seven Tigers to register at least two sacks last season.
