Auburn basketball opens play in the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament at 2 p.m. CT against Mississippi State in Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, needing a few wins this week to claim an NCAA Tournament berth.
So, how close are they to making March Madness ahead of a busy week in Nashville? Auburn is "on the bubble" according to ESPN and USA TODAY's latest bracketology, which places Auburn in the "first four out" category.
USA TODAY Sports places Auburn in the category with Cincinnati, West Virginia, and Stanford as teams needing a successful week at their respective conference tournaments to nail down an NCAA Tournament bid. Auburn fell from the "last four in" category after losing by double-digits on the road to Alabama on Saturday, and will have one last shot at securing a bid this week in Nashville.
ESPN's bracketology, which changes frequently in March, has Auburn as the "first team out" in its latest forecast. Joe Lunardi has been on the fence with Auburn, moving them between "last four in" and "first four out" over the last two weeks based on Auburn's results and the results of other teams on the bubble. Auburn joins Virginia Tech, New Mexico, and Stanford in ESPN's latest projections.
Despite finishing SEC play at 7-11 and grabbing the No. 12 seed in the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament, Auburn's strength of schedule is keeping them in the picture. The Tigers are 4-12 against Quad 1 teams, with their best wins coming on the road at Florida and a win at home over Arkansas. Auburn head coach Steven Pearl feels his team is, resume-wise, qualified to make the NCAA Tournament.
"We’ve put ourselves in a position to be considered, and I think our resume stands up against anybody’s,” Pearl said ahead of Wednesday's game with Mississippi State. "We have enough quality wins to be in this tournament. We have five of the best wins in the country, we have the best win in college basketball at Florida."
Auburn's quest for an NCAA Tournament bid begins Wednesday against Mississippi State in the first round of the SEC Men's Basketball Tournament. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
