Auburn baseball closed out its nine-game homestand with a massive win over an in-state rival.
Auburn jumped out to a 4-0 1st inning lead, and scored five runs in multiple innings to secure a 17-2, seven-inning win over the UAB Blazers on Tuesday night at Plainsman Park. The win was the biggest of its midweek slate so far this season and adds momentum ahead of the Tigers' SEC weekend opener at Missouri, which begins Friday night.
“I thought we were invested in almost every sequence,” Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said postgame. “It wasn't just one person. We can sit here and talk about three, four guys with good nights. For us to just play good baseball it has to be all of us. We need contribution from the top, middle and the bottom. As a unit, that was the story of the night was how we played offense, not individual hitters, per se, but just how we played offense as a group and together up and down the lineup.”
Auburn's pitching limited a power-hitting UAB lineup to just three hits and zero home runs in the game. The Blazers could not muster an extra-base hit in the game, and only two batters advanced past second base. Andreas Alvarez struck out four batters in his five-inning start, where he allowed two hits and two runs (zero were earned), and walked one batter. LJ Cormier struck out all three batters he faced, while Connor Gatwood allowed a hit and a walk in his inning of relief.
At the plate, Eric Guevara went 4-for-4 with Chris Rembert and Ethin Bingaman behind him with three of their own. Guevara, Rembert, Chase Fralick, and Lucas Steele each hit home runs in the game, with Steele's 5th-inning grand slam putting the icing on the cake.
Auburn will now turn its attention to SEC play, where the Missouri Tigers will await them for a three-game series beginning Friday in Columbia. Game one of the series will begin at 6 p.m. CT and will air on SEC Network+.
