Arizona State women's basketball coach Molly Miller, in her first season leading the Sun Devils, has pushed her team to surprising success. ASU carried a 16-1 record into a matchup Sunday, Jan. 11, at TCU (No. 13 in the AP poll, No. 10 in the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll).
While the Big 12 schedule is imposing, Miller aims to contend for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
What are her women’s Final Four predictions?
“A biased nod would be the Sun Devils," she said recently, "but the teams I’ve enjoyed watching, and this is probably predictable, are UConn, South Carolina, UCLA and Texas.”
Entering the weekend, those four made up the top of the two major national rankings (the USA TODAY coaches poll and the Associated Press poll): UConn, Texas, South Carolina and UCLA, in that order.
ASU received two votes in the USA TODAY poll, good for a tie for 34th, but none in the AP poll.
The top four boast deep rosters with a collective greatness. Only two players from the top schools, in fact, crack the top 30 for individual scoring as of Jan. 7: South Carolina's Joyce Edwards (21 points per game) and Texas' Madison Booker (19.1 ppg).
Miller believes it's highly unlikely that the top-ranked Huskies won't be playing April 3 at Mortgage Matchup Center.
“UConn, the consensus from everyone would probably be if they’re not in the Final Four, pigs are flying," Miller said. "They’re champions. And, obviously, South Carolina is consistently seen as a Final Four contender. They’ve got the SEC pedigree.
"I think UCLA cracks it because the talent runs deep there. I like what they have inside and out. And Texas because they’re kind of outside that blueblood prediction, but I like the way they defend, and I think they’ve got some talent.”
ASU finishes its regular season March 1. The Big 12 Conference tourney begins March 4 in Kansas City.
