The Los Angeles Angels are a team to keep an eye on in the coming days ahead of the trade deadline as they possess three huge trade chips.
Starting pitchers Reid Detmers and José Soriano as well as shortstop Zach Neto have received lots of interest from contenders seeking controllable starters and right-handed bats, but it’s going to take a lot of compensation to pry any of them away from the Angels.
After getting clowned within the media and online because of the borderline embarrassing return for catcher Logan O’Hoppe and reliever Chase Silseth in the trade with the Texas Rangers, it seems like Angels brass heard the noise and is stepping up their game.
According to ESPN’s latest trade deadline intel, insider Alden Gonzalez reported that the asking price for Los Angeles’ coveted starters is extremely high.
“Teams that have checked in with Los Angeles Angels interim general manager John Mozeliak on pitchers Jose Soriano and Reid Detmers have described his asking price as ‘wild’ and ‘ridiculous,’ leaving some to wonder if the negative reaction to the return for Logan O'Hoppe and Chase Silseth has prompted a harder line,” Gonzalez wrote Saturday.
“Given that, a rival executive pointed out, it is not unreasonable for Mozeliak to have high demands for two starters who are controllable through 2028.”
Aside from the contract situation and age of both pitchers (27-years-old), their performances this season alone should warrant a large package.
Detmers is 3-7 with a 4.03 ERA but has a 1.10 WHIP (15th) with 145 strikeouts (ninth-most) to just 38 walks through 22 starts (125 innings). He’s a legitimate strikeout specialist and features devastating stuff from a unique delivery.
Detmers is posting career-bests in opponent batting average (.214), on-base percentage (.276), slugging percentage (.364), OPS (.640) and walk rate (7.4 percent). The southpaw is currently on pace to throw 184 innings and strike out 214 batters, which would shatter his career-highs of 148.2 innings and 168 strikeouts.
Soriano was the best pitcher in baseball through his first six starts, posting historic numbers before coming back down to earth, but the overall return on his season so far has been fantastic.
The right-hander is 9-6 with a 3.29 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 127 strikeouts to 57 walks over 22 starts (123 innings). Soriano has been dealing as of late, posting a 2.74 ERA over four July outings (23 innings).
Soriano was scheduled to make his 23rd start of the season against the Milwaukee Brewers, a potential trade partner, but was scratched with the deadline looming.
“Today, José Soriano will not make his scheduled start,” Mozeliak announced in a statement Saturday. “With the trade deadline on Monday and the uncertainty of the next 48 hours, we decided to take a prudent approach and see where these next few days lead us.”
The trade deadline is Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. EDT.
