Q: Ira, we’re left with half a team. Now what? – Eddie.

A: I received plenty of this through the course of the negotiations for Giannis Antetokounmpo and even more in the wake of the trade with the Bucks. Yes, as noted, the Heat gave up a boatload. But, still, it’s not like we’re talking about a sinking ship. If things can be made to work under the cap, tax, aprons, the Heat could field a starting lineup of Giannis, Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, Norman Powell and Davion Mitchell, with a bench featuring Pelle Larsson, Bobby Portis and Dru Smith. Plus, lower-end veterans figure to flock to the Heat to fill the voids at backup center and shooting specialist. So add one of each and you’re talking about being 10 deep with proven quantities. The key to the next Heat evolution seemingly is to get off the contract of Nikola Jovic to create the needed cap room. But it’s not as if the Heat have many, if any sweeteners, to offer. Still, the bottom line is the Heat ended Monday as a far better team than where they began the day, at least as long as they can reel back in Wiggins and Powell.

A: Based on the ongoing length of Erik Spoelstra’s contract, it’s not like the Heat are or will be in the market for a coach. But there certainly is ample organizational respect from the Heat for Dusty May’s body of work, from the miracle run to the Final Four at FAU to the immediate success at Michigan. It is among the reasons Jack May has been a Heat video intern. And it is a reason why the Heat have had so much respect for Michigan players these past two years, including signing Vlad Goldin to a two-way contract immediately after last year’s draft.

Q: So no Trae Young? – Hank.

A: No, no Trae Young. And it never was going to be Trae Young, which is why he took the money with the Wizards. The fact that Washington went to the max seems like an overpay, considering what the Hawks looked like before they dealt him last season and then after they dealt him. But the Wizards should be interesting next season, with Trae, Anthony Davis and Tuesday’s No. 1 pick in the NBA draft.
