Q: Ira, could the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade come down to whether or not a player that Milwaukee likes is still on the board at No. 13? – Robert.

A: Typically that would be a factor. However, this year’s NBA draft is so loaded, it’s not as if a quality prospect is not going to be there at No. 13. In fact, a case easily could be made that the player selected at No. 13 this year would be a player who next year could be Top 5 or Top 10 if he stayed in school. Plus, the Bucks’ roster is so threadbare that it’s not as if any player taken at No. 13 wouldn’t help them (the Bucks’ horrid draft record aside).

Q: The Bucks owner set a deadline of the draft day to make a decision regarding Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Heat should also have that deadline. If by that day if there is no deal, they should draft the Heat player for their needs, and also come to some agreement with Andrew Wiggins. If he agrees to opt-in, I would imagine he would want an assurance that he won’t be dealt as part of a future Giannis deal. The same might be true if Norman Powell agrees to re-sign. Otherwise, the Heat could end up without Giannis and without these two players and possibly the best draft choice. – Joel.

A: Tuesday night’s first round of the NBA draft has to be a deadline with the Heat, simply because the No. 13 pick is among the Heat’s best trade assets, and an asset that effectively expires once a player is selected by the Heat at that slot. Without that asset, the Heat’s package is severely degraded.

Q: If the Heat don’t get Giannis Antetokounmpo, would Norman Powell want to stay? What are the chances he gets moved as soon as he’s signed? Would the Heat give him a no trade clause? – Mike.

A: At this point, at 33 and coming off his first All-Star appearance, the priority for Norman Powell likely is to get paid, and get paid for several years. To that degree, he can’t necessarily be choosy. So if the Heat money is there – with or without Giannis Antetokounmpo – Norm signs on the dotted line. The chances for a longer-term deal would increase if Giannis is acquired (and Tyler Herro therefore is dealt). If no Giannis, then the Heat likely would continue to maximize cap space for the 2027 offseason. In that case, the offer to Norm (no matter the money) likely would be limited to one guaranteed season. At this stage of his career, that would be a difficult pill to swallow. So to that extent, the Giannis outcome likely will directly impact Norm’s outcome.
