Sidelined since Saturday due to tightness in his right calf, Yankees' slugger Giancarlo Stanton is headed to the 10-day injury list.
Aaron Boone made the announcement to reporters following the Yankees’ 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers in Arlington on Monday night.
As anticipated, the Yankees recalled switch-hitting outfielder Jasson Dominguez from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre prior to Monday night's game against the Rangers at Texas.
Right-hander Luis Gil was optioned to Triple-A following his ineffective start in Sunday's 7-4 loss at Houston.
The organization's belief over the weekend was that Stanton, 36, could be ready to return from the IL not long after he's eligible; the earliest date would be May 5.
Stanton's absence could mean a few more starts at designated hitter for Aaron Judge, with along with Dominguez, Ben Rice and Amed Rosario.
With a lengthy history of lower body injuries, Stanton developed his latest issue running the bases during Friday night's 12-4 win against the Astros at Daikin Park.
After a sixth-inning single, Stanton said he “felt fine’’ running to first base but experienced discomfort as he advanced to second base on a walk to Jazz Chisholm Jr.
“I didn’t just walk to second, I gave it a little jog, and it felt weird,’’ said Stanton. And as he took his secondary lead off second base, “it kept feeling weird.’’
A day later, Stanton reported improvement in his condition, but he was not available Saturday and did not play in Sunday's game.
“We don’t want this to turn into a protracted situation. (We’ll) proceed accordingly,’’ manager Aaron Boone said this past weekend, leaving the Yankees' options open.
Stanton didn’t start the 2025 season until mid-June, following the management and treatment of chronic epicondylitis in both elbows – a condition that first flared in 2024.
Upon his return, Stanton posted a .944 OPS in 77 games, with 24 homers and 66 RBI. Stanton, 36, has a .724 OPS with three homers and 14 RBI in his first 24 games this year.
In 24 games at the Class AAA affiliate, Dominguez is batting .326 (30-for-92) with three homers, 15 RBI, eight stolen bases and an .893 OPS.
