Last night the Sting completed the sweep of Portland, winning 12-9. Dan Dawson lead the effort with three goals and three assists. Dawson is now fourth in the league with 24 points. Craig Conn also had a goal and four assists, giving him 20 points in four games. Arizona is now 3-1 on the year, half a game back of Colorado. The Sting have a bye week, and then face the expansion New York Titans at home.

Goalie Rob Blasdell was named the NLL Player of the Week for his effort in shutting down Portland in the two game sweep a week ago.

The Sting also signed Mark Cochrane, I think this is his third time with the Sting now. He is the guy we always manage to pull out of retirement whenever one of our defensemen gets injured, but he can still play. He'll do a good job filling in for the hurt Greg Hinman.

Dan Dawson is simply awesome. He had six goals in this weekend's game against New York. It was a tight game and every time the Sting needed a big goal, Dawson delivered. He is one of the most dominating players in the league, and at the pace he is scoring this season, he'll be an MVP candidate.

Dawson's goal stops Edmonton
Plunkett ties game late in regulation; Blasdell key in net

The Sting found themselves staring in the face of a second straight defeat at the hands of Edmonton until Dan Dawson, Lindsay Plunkett and Rob Blasdell changed the course of the game - and possibly the season - with their late-game heroics Sunday.

Most crucially, three minutes into sudden-death overtime Dawson beat Edmonton Rush goaltender Curtis Palidwor with a shot into the upper-right corner of the net to give the Sting a thrilling 12-11 triumph and send the 7,063 fans at Jobing.com Arena home happy.

Dawson's goal never could have happened without Plunkett and Blasdell's last-minute efforts. advertisement

Down 11-10 heading into the final minute of regulation, Plunkett whipped a shot past Palidwor to tie the game and give the Sting a chance to simply get to overtime.

But the Rush, who scored eight second-half goals and were having their way with the Arizona defense, mounted one more attack.

With five seconds left in regulation, an Edmonton shot hit the crossbar behind Blasdell, the Sting goalie, and began bouncing perilously toward the net before Blasdell turned and smothered the ball and saved the game for the Sting.

"We made a lot of mistakes, but at the end of the day we've got to take what the end result was," Sting coach Bob Hamley said after the game in which his team improved to 5-2.

Hamley said he believed his team began playing to protect its lead after the Sting took a 9-4 advantage late in the third quarter.

The team's failure to continue to attack Edmonton, combined with what Hamley called "mental mistakes," allowed Edmonton to put together a big rally that culminated in the Rush's one-goal advantage before Plunkett's goal.

"This is a game of runs and momentum swings," Hamley said. "You just hope your momentum swings are bigger than theirs."

The first half of the contest was a defensive struggle.

After shutting down Arizona's offense a week ago in Edmonton, Palidwor picked up right where he left off against the Sting in the first half, holding the Sting to four goals.

However, Blasdell was up to the challenge as he quieted the Rush offense, keeping it to three goals to stake the Sting to a narrow advantage.

Making the Sting's win all the more important is the fact that the team now must go on the road to face East Division-leading Rochester.

Dan Dawson had "just" three goals in the Edmonton game, but one was the OT game winner and he followed up with 4 assists for a total of 7 points. He is currently second in the league in goals scored (with one less game played) and tied for 7th in total points. If he keeps his torrid pace he'll for certain be an MVP candidate at the end of the season.

If you've never seen the Sting play you're missing out. Its great entertainment at a solid price and the team has one of the most dominating and exciting players in the league. Check the team out, you won't regret it.

The Sting defeated Chicago last night 11-7, the last game before heading into the All-Star break. Dan Dawson scored 5 goals and 3 assists and Lindsay Plunkett added 2 goals and 4 assists. Arizona's defense was clicking, only allowing 36 shots in the game. The Sting are now 6-3, second place in the West division behind Colorado.

Slightly OT:

I was at the Colorado Mammoth game a couple of weeks ago where a couple of the guys I play with in a men's league were playing in the half-time exhibition Police vs. Fire Department game. Good times. Good times.

Its 1-0 San Jose after the first quarter tonight, a really tight game defensively as neither team has been able to get many quality chances.

The Sting fell behind 5-0 in the second quarter, but have now tied the game going into halftime. A win tonight for Arizona seals a playoff spot.

The Sting are moving on!! Arizona defeated Calgary 13-9, looks like Calgary tried to goon it up a bit with a cross checking plus a high sticking penalty in the last two minutes of the game. San Jose just defeated the defending champions Colorado, so Arizona will host their next playoff game at home!

cool.. now, say the Sting wins.. Where do they the championship game?
I would have to look it up, but I think home advantage in the championship is also determined by the seed. The Sting are the third seed in the west so the odds are against them hosting the final game.
