The Arizona Cardinals will have to make their final roster decisions a little earlier after the preseason this year. The NFL announced a date change for the final roster cutdown. This year, the Cardinals and the rest of the NFL must cut their rosters down to 53 players by 6 p.m. ET (3 p.m. Arizona time) on Sunday, Aug. 30.
Previously, the cutdown date was the Tuesday following the final preseason game.
The Cardinals play their preseason finale on Friday, Aug. 28. That will give them less than 48 hours to make their final decisions with the roster — who to cut, who to place on injured reserve and other reserve lists, who to designate to return and more.
Waiver claims must be made by Monday, Aug. 31 at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. Arizona time).
Teams wanted to have a little more time to set rosters this year, especially as the season will begin on a Monday night.
This will allow teams to have their practice squads and waiver additions finalized by Tuesday, giving teams more practice time before the start of Week 1.
So now we will have an extra Sunday to pay attention to before the season begins.
