RATHDRUM, Idaho — In 5A Inland Empire League boys basketball district tournament loser-out play, the Moscow Bears pulled a 66-52 upset over the Lakeland Hawks of Rathdrum on Tuesday at Lakeland High School to keep their season alive.
"It finally all came together for the first time in several weeks," said Moscow coach Mark Smith, whose team avenged two regular-season defeats with the showing. "Abram (Godfrey) had a good game, Keaton (Frei) had probably the game of his life offensively and Jonas (Mordhorst) had a really good game also."
Frei was the game's top scorer with 25 points, knocking down 10 field goals including three from beyond the arc en route to that total. Godfrey had four 3s and chalked up 18 points on the day, Mordhorst scored 11 for the Bears, and Jonah Couch and Jericho Pike each added five.
"I was really proud of my guys," Smith said. "It's great to see that at the end of the year."
The Bears (4-19) return to action at 6 p.m. Thursday playing as visitors against the Sandpoint Bulldogs in another loser-out game.

LAPWAI — A strong first quarter and a solid free-throw performance enabled the Mustangs to pull the upset over the second-seeded Nighthawks in 1A Whitepine League district tournament loser-out play at Lapwai High School.
Jacob Mechling (12 points) and Rowdy Stettler (11) led the way for Deary (8-13), which avenged two regular-season defeats with the result. The Mustangs were outshot 16-14 from the field, but compensated with frequent trips to the line, where they went 13-for-19.
Slater Kuther of Nezperce (14-9) topped all scorers with 16 points. Kyler Brinkerhoff scored another 12 for the Nighthawks, who made an efficient 6-of-7 free throws themselves, but were outpaced due to Deary's volume in the season-ending defeat.
The Mustangs will next meet St. John Bosco of Cottonwood in another loser-out game at 6 p.m. Thursday back at Lapwai.

PALOUSE — The host Vikings played "extremely good defense," in the words of coach Jake Wells, as they handled Entiat in Washington Class 1B state tournament play.
"It was all five guys playing as one on the defensive end," Wells said. "Holding a state team to 27 points was very impressive."
Liam Cook was an "absolute stud" in producing 27 points for Garfield-Palouse (19-7), and Lane Collier added 17.
Gar-Pal returns to action on Friday facing Muckleshoot Tribal in loser-out play at Auburn High School.

Grangeville's Barger named League MVP
Grangeville's Caryss Barger was named the league MVP to highlight six Tribune-area honorees among the 3A Central Idaho League's end-of-season awards.
Fellow Bulldogs Addiysn Vanderwall and Autumn Long were named to the first team, as voted on by league coaches. Grangeville placed third in the Idaho Class 3A state tournament over the weekend.
Three Orofino Maniacs made the second team.

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Idaho's Jung Boram sits in fourth place among individuals through the first two rounds of competition in the GCU Invitational women's event with a 1-below par total of 143 strokes.
The Vandals hold second place in the five-team field with a team score of 291, trailing host Grand Canyon by 13 strokes.
The tournament will conclude with a third round of action teeing off today at 6:30 a.m. Pacific.
