According to Talia Goodman of On3, Rutgers women’s basketball guard Antonia Bates has announced her intentions to enter the transfer portal. This announcement comes less than 24 hours after it was announced that the Scarlet Knights hired former LSU assistant Gary Redus II to be their new head coach. Bates was the only player to play four years under head coach Coquese Washington during her four years at the helm. Bates was originally recruited out of high school by former Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer.
Bates battled through injury during much of her career at Rutgers, but was able to suit up for every game last season, where she averaged 2 points and 5 rebounds in 26.6 minutes per game.
Bates missed much of the last off-season due to a surgery she had in January of 2025. According to Bates herself, she had an injury in high school that never healed properly, and it would lead to her continually dislocating her kneecap, even while doing daily tasks. The surgery and recovery process forced her to miss almost all of last season. She was given a medical redshirt last season after only appearing in five games before the surgery.
Her best season at Rutgers was during her sophomore campaign, when she averaged 3.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in an average of about 30 minutes on the court.
She will have one year of eligibility to use at her new school.
With Redus being hired yesterday, a fifteen-day transfer portal window for current Rutgers women’s basketball players will open up in five days. That is when Bates is expected to officially enter the portal. She is the only one who has announced her intentions to transfer so far.
