Lightning can send the Jacksonville Jaguars inside for practice, but when it’s just rain, the show goes on and it did on Monday, Aug. 3, for the first fully-padded workout.

“It’s football,” coach Liam Coen said. “(The weather) has to be an edge for us here in Florida and knowing last year, we had a delay in Week 1. We have to get that work in (when it’s raining). These guys, they don’t care. They just want to play.”

The only part of practice moved inside was a 1-on-1 period of receivers vs. cornerbacks.

“The 1-on-1 pass game would have been a waste of time to do out here (because of the slick field) so we wanted to make sure we got clean work (inside),” Coen said.

Here is a recap of practice No. 5:

Player attendance

Did not practice: LT Cole Van Lanen (right knee) and OT Garrett DiGiorgio (foot) remain on the physically unable to perform list. LB Jack Kiser (right knee) missed his fourth consecutive missed practice. RG Patrick Mekari (back) did not appear to take any work.

Limited practice work: CB Christian Braswell (lower body) did individual work only.

Top plays

  • It took one play in full pads to see why the Jaguars signed RB Chris Rodriguez, Jr. On his first carry of team work, Rodriguez burst through the line and ran over S Caleb Ransaw. “He did what you think he’s going to do in a way,” coach Liam Coen said. “I don’t think he even lowered his shoulder on Caleb. It was just one of those hits. He showed up, which is what you’re hoping. He’s continuously getting better.”
  • WR Brian Thomas, Jr., made a terrific one-handed catch 27 yards downfield in team work with CB Buster Brown draped all over him.

Thumbs up

WR Brian Thomas, Jr.: In addition to the one-handed catch in team work, he also had two catches in 1-on-1 against CB Buster Brown and CB Jourdan Lewis.

OT Anton Harrison: He went 4-0 in 1-on-1 pass protection work, winning twice against DE Josh Hines-Allen and once apiece against DE Travon Walker and DE Danny Striggow.

DT Ruke Orhorhoro: The 317-pounder, by coach Liam Coen’s estimate, would have had multiple sacks in team work.

DE Travon Walker: He looked sharp in pass rush work, using speed to beat OT Chuma Edoga, a quick-twitch move to beat RG Wyatt Milum and power to beat RT Walker Little (Little won the rematch).

Thumbs down

RG Wyatt Milum: It was tough sledding in 1-on-1 pass protection work for Milum. He lost match-ups to DT Arik Armstead, DT Ruke Orhorhoro and DE Travon Walker.

QB Joey Aguilar: He has to make every play count and his first one of team work was a fumbled snap.

Odds and Ends

  • The Jaguars’ first padded practice consisted of 35 plays of 11-on-11 work and one period of 1-on-1s between receivers and cornerbacks and offensive and defensive linemen.
  • For the first time in camp, coach Liam Coen pitted the first-team offense against the first-team defense. Each play was a third-and-medium situation. QB Trevor Lawrence was 3 of 3 with completions to WR Parker Washington, TE Brenton Strange and WR Brian Thomas, Jr. QB Nick Mullens was 0 for 2 with one “sack” in three snaps. QB Carter Bradley was 0 of 2 and QB Joey Aguilar 1 of 1.
  • Coen on the “Mamba Period,” (starters vs. starters): “We got some good, quality work and it was good to see guys make plays in those situations. It felt the protection was somewhat clean. That will ramp up more, we’ll keep getting more of that good on good work as we get the pads on and are in pads more consistently.”
  • Normal RT Anton Harrison played left tackle for the third consecutive practice. It sure sounds like Coen is leaving the door open on that switch. “I think he’s done a nice job, “Coen said. “It’s part of what we’ve done, moving those guys around and seeing what sticks and if that ends up sticking, hopefully that’s a good thing for us.” In theory, that would allow the Jaguars to move Cole Van Lanen to right tackle and have Walker Little as the back-up swing tackle.
  • Notable wins in 1-on-1 linemen drills: DT Ruke Orhorhoro used a swim move to beat LG Ezra Cleveland (Cleveland won the first match-up), C Jonah Monheim and DT Matt Dickerson exchanged brief words after their match-up, LT Anton Harrison did a nice job recovering/setting his feet against DE Danny Striggow and DT DaVon Hamilton used a quick first step to get around C Robert Hainsey.
  • Run game emphasis in 11-on-11: Eight of the first nine plays during the first team period and 13 of the 16 plays were rushes.
  • For the Brady Boyd fans, the rookie receiver switched from No. 49 to No. 83.
  • Former Florida State QB Danny McManus attended practice in his role as assistant general manager/director of U.S. scouting for the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
