MEM trade
Brevin Knight
Wesley Person

MEM get
Latrell Sprewell

NYK trade
Latrell Sprewell

NYK get
Anfernee Hardaway
PHO's pick (#17´)

PHO trade
Anfernee Hardaway
2003 1st rounder (#17)

PHO get
Wesley Person
Brevin Knight

Some NYK fans think that Penny could play a PG for NYK and they can pick up a (future) starting quality SF at #17.
I don't but who knows?

MEM get their veteran SG leader and improve their perimeter defense.Sprewell's contract is just one year longer than Person's and Knight's.

Suns get a sharpsshooter SG a servicable backup PG AND a huge cap relief with Person's and Knight's expiring contracts.

I would do this deal at a heartbeat from PHO's viewpoint.
You?

I would rather have Latrell. But I would do this trade but with Googs. Not sure if NY would be willing to take all that money of Penny and the 1st rounder. I am also not sure Mem would want to give up two expiring contacts. Plus they would be over the cap next year if they got Spree.. and would not try to sign Swift the following year. So if the gave us Swift and Pearson I would to the trade( I would go with Swift and Knight but the contacts would be to small).

While I was all for trading Penny last summer, I don't want to trade him now.

The record this year clearly shows Penny's value, especially in on-the-court chemistry. While it is certain that he is not worth his large contract, the stability he adds to our roster is vital to the development of this young team.

I am really not interested in trade scenarios for Penny unless it returns us a top flight player that really fills a need--and thats not going to happen.

Wesley Person is not that player.

True but Swift might be.

I don't think that Suns would need Sprewell.
I don't have any problems with Penny as a player. He accepted his role and his contribution was decent and servicable.
I'm not sure that Sprewell would be able to recognize and accept his reduced role.

All what I expect from moving of Penny are shorter and/or expiring contracts which would free up some FA-signing possibilities.

About Swift:

If he can't play C then he doesn't really have a future at Suns.
If he can then MEM wouldn't trade him.

BTW,Penny is by not enough to land Sift.

I wouldn't.
Person couldn't get PT behind Penny and Johnson and Knight isn't worth #17.

There's no way Memphis would make this deal. Supposedly they are anxious to shed salary, so they might have a chance have grabbing Kobe Bryant if he opts out of his contract. I would think the last player Jerry West wants around his young guys is Latrell Sprewell.

Johnson, Penny, Person playing the other spots. You know FJ would use these lineups.

He might very well use that lineup, but do you REALLY hope that he does?

MEM's projected team pay-roll will be about 44 mil. in 2004 and Swift and Miller will need new contracts.
So it's very very unlikely that they will have enough cap room for a max. FA in 2004.

As of right now it doesnt seem likely, but if the direction that west wants to take in 2004 is what we have heard all year long, he wants to sign a max player that summer (either tmac or kobe if they opt out)

by making this trade it means he is giving up on the chance he could trade away other contracts to fall below the cap.

Because he is probably the best shooter in the NBA.

We traded Dan Majerle and got him back, we traded Ceballos twice or so....

What did the Suns get for Person, anyway? NBA.com says,

Traded by the Suns with Tony Dumas to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a three-way deal with the Denver Nuggets for a future first round pick on 10/1/97

Surely the Suns got more than a future first-rounder back, didn't they?

In fact, is that the God-forsaken lottery-protected-forever pick? Eewww!

Person is a one-dimensional player, but a good one. He certainly brings more to the table than Jacobsen, and I'd be happy to see him help to limit Hardaway's minutes.

I thought Person was part of the original Dice deal. It was a three way with Denver, Phoenix, and Cleveland.

Ah, it looks like you're right. This from NBA.com's file on McDyess:

Traded by the Nuggets to the Phoenix Suns in a three-way deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers for a total of three first round picks, two second round picks and an undisclosed amount of cash on 10/1/97

Since McDyess was such a flop, I'd be all for bringing Person back. Some sort of poetic justice.
