The Los Angeles Angels completed their first series sweep of the season against the Texas Rangers in Anaheim, as Reid Detmers struck out 14 hitters and the Halos got the winning run in the 2-1 victory via an error on a botched double play ball.

This was a pitchers duel that featured one strike out after another, but the Rangers got on the board first in the second inning on a solo home run by Jake Burger. The Angels got the run back in the third on an RBI single by Mike Trout that scored Sebastian Rivero after Rivero walked.

Reid Detmers started this one for the Angels, and he was brilliant in what was his best start of the year. He struck out 14 and dominated the Rangers other than the Burger homer, and at one point he retired 21 hitters in a row as he also posted a career-high in getting swings-and-misses with 26.

Unfortunately for the Angels, Rangers starter McKenzie Gore was just as good on the scoreboard. The Halos got just three hits while striking out 12 times, with Gore posting seven of those and reliever Jakob Junis earning four when he picked up Gore after the starter went six innings.

Sam Bachman came on for Detmers and had an adventurous ninth as he loaded the bases, but he was able to escape unscathed to finish off the regulation pitching for the Angels.

The Halos came back to score the winning run in the most bizarro Angels fashion off reliever Gavin Collyer. The rally started after a Vaughn Grissom strikeout with a single from Jorge Soler, and Jo Adell was then hit by a pitch.

Oswald Peraza then hit a tailor-made double play ball with a chopper over the middle, but second baseman Justin Foscue had trouble getting a handle on the ball as he stepped on second, and his wild throw got past Burger at first to plate pinch-runner Donovan Walton as he rounded third and kept going on the errant throw with no one backing it up.

Bachman got the win in this one after his scoreless frame, but Detmers was the pitching hero as he struck out 14. Almost as astonishing was the fact that Detmers didn’t walk anyone, as walks have been a problem for him in many of his starts. The Angels also struck out a dozen teams as the two teams combined to whiff an astounding 28 times.

This was a welcome weekend full of wins without any bad miscues or losses for the Halos, and at the very least it’s a break from all the relentless losing they’ve been doing lately. The Angels posted their first series sweep of the season, and they’ve now won three in a row. They get a rare Memorial Day off tomorrow, and after that they’ll hit the road for a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers.
