Each offseason we roll out spring previews detailing key players on Michigan Football’s roster for the upcoming season. Today, we discuss offensive lineman Andrew Sprague as he enters a very critical campaign.

The story so far

Sprague was a consensus four-star prospect and Top 100 recruit out of Rockhurst High School in the class of 2024. The 6-foot-8, 315-pounder was the 68th highest-ranked player in the country and the sixth-rated offensive tackle. After receiving interest from Notre Dame, Northwestern, Stanford and several others, he committed to Michigan in April 2023. The Wolverines were one of the first schools to offer Sprague, and he enrolled the following summer.

During his freshman campaign in 2024, Sprague appeared in four games, gaining valuable playing experience early in his career. Most notably, he earned his first start against Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl, and he performed at a high level. Thrust into the fire against a top-tier SEC defense, Sprague played 67 offensive snaps and was Michigan’s highest-graded (63.3) offensive player per Pro Football Focus. In 19 pass-blocking snaps, he allowed just one quarterback pressure.

Sprague’s standout debut against Alabama acted as a springboard, setting the stage for him to take over as the starter at right tackle last season and eventually take home All-Big Ten honors. Now, he is hoping to follow it up with an even better 2026.

Outlook for 2026

Entering the season, Sprague is still expected to be a starter but he could line up at either right guard or right tackle. No matter where he ends up starting in 2026, he will undoubtedly be an anchor and a leader for the offensive line.

Sprague was ranked as one of the nation’s top returning offensive tackles by Pro Football Focus — in part because he’s allowed just one sack across 383 career pass-blocking snaps — and he will continue to be a tone-setter for the offense this season.

Going a step further, Sprague was one of five Big Ten offensive linemen to record a 70.0+ overall grade in pass and run blocking last season. If he can continue to improve, Sprague could be one of the most dominant offensive linemen in the country.

Michigan offensive line assistant coach Mike Lynch spoke very highly of Sprague and said he should be in store for a great year. “He’s more physical than he was in the fall. He just keeps working and getting better. I’m excited about him,” Lynch said.

Sprague has certainly proven to be very capable and effective throughout the last two years, but he must take it up another notch in 2026. With an extra year of experience and increased level of physicality, Sprague is ready to reach new heights.
