The Jacksonville Jaguars should be extending wide receiver Parker Washington soon.
According to one analyst, the sooner the better.
Aaron Schatz of ESPN recently wrote an article where he identifies one remaining move each NFL team should make before the start of the 2026 season.
For the Jaguars, Schlatz thinks the team needs to get a contract extension done with Washington. He believes Jacksonville would be smart to get a deal done in the coming weeks before the regular season begins.
Schatz believes that if an extension isn't signed before the season starts, the price to keep Washington will only get more expensive. With a bigger role in the forecast for 2026, he thinks Washington can easily improve on his numbers from 2025, when he caught 58 passes for 847 yards and five touchdowns.
Washington's breakout year could be a prelude to bigger and better things this season. The hype surrounding the 24-year-old has been building throughout the offseason, and there are many reasons to believe that Washington will be one of the most productive players for the Jaguars in 2026.
Washington is already expected to receive an extension that could approach the $20 million/year range. Another outstanding year will only have that price go up, leading Schatz to suggest getting the deal done now.
He also points out that the Jaguars are expected to have Travis Hunter focus on the cornerback position over WR this year, which will lead to a bump in opportunities for Washington.
Should Jacksonville feel comfortable giving a player who only has one season's worth of solid production a long-term deal worth $20 million/year? Right now, 25 NFL wide receivers are paid at least that much, including Washington's teammate Jakobi Meyers, who signed his extension after being traded to Jacksonville mid-season.
Is Washington a top-25 receiver in the league? That depends on who you ask. There is also a debate over whether Washington is the Jaguars' best receiver, second-best, or third. And that's not even including Hunter in the conversation.
Committing that kind of money to Washington would be a risk; however, it is also necessary. By this time next year, there could be 35 WRs averaging $20 million. That's the way it goes in the NFL. Locking Washington in long-term now keeps that price from going even higher.
Washington excelled in his first season where he was given a real opportunity to shine. There's no reason to suspect his production last year was a fluke, or that it won't be improved upon with an even bigger role in 2026.
At only 24, it is also reasonable to believe that Washington hasn't even started to hit his prime yet. It would be wise for the Jaguars to get him signed long-term now, before he has a chance to show an even higher level than he showed last year.
The season starts in less than three months, giving Jacksonville more than enough time to reach an agreement with Washington.
The sooner the better.
