Jul. 8—MOUNT VERNON, S.D. — The Parkston Rays tallied five home runs and scored 22 runs in four innings in a 22-0 win over Sunshine League amateur baseball foe Mount Vernon on Tuesday night. The 15-run rule ended the game after the fourth inning.
Seth Muth starred for the Rays, finishing 4-for-5 with two home runs, four runs scored and seven RBIs. Muth had a grand slam in the third inning, which was the second four-run home run of the game, following Carter Sommer's grand slam in the second inning. Nolan Dvorak and Landon Sudbeck also had home runs in the second inning. Jaxx Kurtenbach had three hits and three RBIs and Doug Sudbeck added two hits. Sommer was the winning pitcher, with three hits and no runs allowed, striking out nine. Muth threw a scoreless fourth inning in relief.
For the Mustangs, Parker Mandel and Austin Graves had the lone hits on offense. Deric Denning was charged with the loss, allowing eight hits and nine runs in two innings on the mound. It was Mount Vernon's fifth loss in a row.
Parkston Rays (10-7, 7-4 Sunshine) will host the Winner/Colome Pheasants at 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 9. Mount Vernon (3-11, 2-10 Sunshine) will host the Parkston Mudcats at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14.

Parkston Mudcats 12, Platte 5 in Platte: The Mudcats scored six times in the second inning and added four runs in the fourth for a road Sunshine League victory. Taite Klumb had a home run and drove in three runs for the Mudcats and Braxton Wilhelm, Gunnar Wilhelm and Mason Jervik each had two RBIs, with Jervik scoring three times. Brady Albrecht added two hits. Dillon Stadlman threw 3 1/3 innings on the mound for the victory, allowing two earned runs before Miles Doyle and Luke Bormann combined for 5 2/3 innings of relief and allowed two runs (one earned), with Doyle piling up seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Platte outhit Parkston 13-8 in the game, including two each from Grayson Hanson, Richard Sternberg, Preston Nedved and Hayden Kuiper. Matt Link took the loss on the mound for Platte, allowing five runs in one inning on the mound.
Flandreau Cardinals 9, Salem 4 in Flandreau: Austin Koenig and Jacob Patterson both had home runs for the Cardinals and Bret Severtson threw eight innings and struck out eight Cubs batters without a walk for a win Tuesday. Keith Cutler was 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs, Koenig had a three-run home run and Patterson finished with three hits and two RBIs. For Salem, Kyle Tuschen and Bobby Koepsell both had three hits each and drove in a run. Owen Alley took the loss on the mound, throwing five innings with nine hits and seven runs (six earned) allowed with four strikeouts.
Canova 15, Baltic 0 (5 inn.) in Baltic: The Gang scored 13 times in the fourth inning to earn a Cornbelt League road win on Tuesday, moving to 12-4 overall on the season. Justin Miller, Jack Neises and Jackson Remmers each finished with two RBIs and Jason Miller had two hits for Canova. Derek Miller was the winning pitcher with five innings on the mound, four hits and no runs allowed, striking out two. River Dawgs' pitcher Tate Fuecht took the loss, allowing seven hits and 14 runs in 3 2/3 innings with eight walks. Baltic committed seven errors on defense, as well.
