May 22—ALEXANDRIA, S.D. — The Parkston Rays emerged on top of a Sunshine League amateur baseball marathon contest on Thursday night, edging Alexandria 11-10 in 13 innings.
With two on and two out in the top of the 13th inning tied at 10, Frank Soukup hit a ground ball that was misplayed by Alexandria, allowing Landon Sudbeck to score the eventual winning run. The Angels got the tying run to second base in the bottom of the inning, but the Rays' Ty Neugebauer closed the door with a strikeout to give the Rays their first Sunshine win of the season.
Parkston led 7-4 after three innings and 10-4 after six innings before Alexandria put up three runs apiece in the seventh and eighth innings. Then the teams didn't score again until the 13th inning, when the Rays broke through. The game had a combined 28 hits, with 16 for the Rays, plus 12 errors, including eight from the Angels.
Parkston had 21 strikeouts as a pitching staff. Carter Sommer started and threw six innings, with nine strikeouts, three earned runs and four hits allowed. Nolan Dvorak had 10 strikeouts in five innings of relief, allowing four earned runs and seven hits. Neugebauer then struck out two Angels in two scoreless innings with one hit allowed. On offense, Sudbeck, Dvorak and Sommer had three hits each, with Sommer driving in two runs for the Rays.
For Alexandria, Jackson Harding had two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Pierce Smith had three hits and scored twice and Ben Wilber had two RBIs. Jack Gray started on the mound and allowed six hits and six runs in 2 1/3 innings, and Dakota Munger threw 3 2/3 innings of relief. AJ Wilber was strongest on the mound for Alexandria, throwing the final seven innings and allowing five hits and the unearned run in the 13th inning, along with nine strikeouts.
Parkston (3-2, 1-1 Sunshine) will travel to play Redfield Dairy Queen at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 24. Alexandria (2-1, 1-1 Sunshine) resumes league play on May 28 at Platte.

Starter Dane Toman had 10 strikeouts in four innings and then handed the ball to Landon Waddell, who had 11 strikeouts in five innings of relief, earning the victory. Dimock/Emery had an 11-2 edge in hits, including Lincoln Bates picking up four hits, including a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Brad Bartscher had a two-run home run and Drew Kitchens added two hits for the Raptors. For Mount Vernon, Tanner Van Driel had both Mustangs' hits and two RBIs. Deric Denning took the loss on the mound, allowing seven hits and six runs in seven innings and picking up seven strikeouts.
Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks 2, Canova 1 in Humboldt: Kyle Konechne had three hits and two RBIs to lead the Gamecocks to a home win in Cornbelt League play. He had an RBI single in both the third and fifth innings. Braylon Bear was the winning pitcher with five innings pitched of one-run ball. Carver Hultgren had five strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of relief and Jonah Rechtenbaugh earned the save in the ninth inning. Tyler Genzlinger had the lone RBI for the Gang, while Jared Miller had two hits. Derek Miller took the loss in relief, throwing two innings and allowing three hits and a run.
Salem 11, Madison 6 in Madison: The Cubs had a seven-run sixth inning to make the decisive move in a Cornbelt League game. Kyle Tuschen drove in three runs and Jacob Vonberge, Cole Cheeseman and Joe Tharaldson each had two RBIs. Owen Alley was the winning pitcher with seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings and allowing four earned runs. Isaac Anderson and Dexter Payne also threw in relief and combined for five strikeouts, giving Salem 12 punchouts on the mound. For Madison, Heith Williams and Tyler Tappe each had home runs and Dawson Bakker had two doubles and drove in a pair of runs. Ian Barker took the loss in relief, allowing seven runs in three innings on the mound.
Freeman 10, Tabor 7 in Tabor: Freeman scored in six of the nine innings of a South Central League game for a road win, finishing with a 17-10 edge in hits. Tyce Ortman had four hits and scored four runs and Jake Weier had three hits, while Sawyer Wipf knocked in a pair of runs for Freeman, which picked up the pitching win via Jackson Fiegen's seven innings and seven strikeouts, allowing two earned runs. Weier threw the final two innings for Freeman, striking out four and allowing three runs. Hunter Hallock had a home run and three RBIs for Tabor, and Chase Kortan had two hits and two RBIs. Bryce Scieszinski was charged with the loss, throwing three innings with seven hits and four runs allowed.
Menno 12, Crofton (Neb.) 6 in Menno: The Mad Frogs scored six runs in the fifth inning to build a 9-1 lead and stay in front for a South Central League win. Brayden Sattler and Trent Guthmiller each had two hits and two RBIs, while Nick Ratzloff had three hits and Kyle Munkvold had a solo home run. Sattler was the winning pitcher after 5 1/3 innings and allowing five hits and three earned runs, striking out four. James Kaiser had two RBIs and two hits for Crofton, and Capp Bengston took the loss for the Bluejays, allowing three runs and four hits in three innings of work.
