Alvin Kamara surprised his New Orleans Saints teammates and coaches by showing up unannounced at Wednesday's organized team activities (OTAs) practice. It's been years since Kamara appeared for these voluntary workouts, instead opting to train privately away from the team until he's contractually required to be present. So what spurred the change in routine?
"I missed New Orleans. I was just coming in, checking in, saying what's up to the team, everybody. Popping in. It was cool. Get a little day (of work). Little different stimulus for my training," Kamara said.
Kamara added that he's been in contact with teammates even if he wasn't there in person, communicating often through phone calls, text messages, and other correspondence. But when the thought to check into the team facility first thing on Wednesday morning came to mind, he couldn't find a reason to continue staying away.
“Like I said I was literally just laying in the bed and said I’ll go tomorrow," Kamara said, recalling how he bought a ticket on a red-eye flight to New Orleans from Miami and traveled to Louisiana overnight. "I called my mom, I was talking to my daughter, she was like 'What are you doing?' I said I think I'm going to go to my other job. She was like 'You're gonna go to work work?' I said yeah, work work. 'You gonna play football?' Yeah, I'm gonna play football. I just decided to come in, it was a good (time)."
As for what he got up to? Kamara joined other players at an early-morning team meeting and went through individual drills at practice, though he was held out of 7-on-7 work. It was his first day of practice and, like other players returning from injuries, the Saints wanted to ramp him up gradually. Kamara missed the final six games with a knee injury but has been training hard this offseason to bounce back from a down year. We'll see how his workload changes in the days and weeks ahead, but for his part, he's already done a lot just by showing up.
