Here's a rare surprise at this week's New Orleans Saints organized team activities (OTAs). Veteran running back Alvin Kamara reported for voluntary workouts, head coach Kellen Moore told reporters Wednesday. Kamara wasn't expected to join the team at their Metairie headquarters until mandatory practices are held on June 16 and June 17. He typically trains away from the team in Miami during the offseason before arriving later in the summer. But with a cloud hanging over the situation, he's taken it on himself to show up early and work alongside his teammates in a show of good faith.

"Alvin got here today, so, he's here. So we'll kind of work with an acclimation process with him, just kind of getting to work with him," Moore said. When asked if this meant the team's contract dispute with Kamara was behind them, Moore answered: "I don't know the business, contractual side of this thing, I don't necessarily think anything's been done there, but it was good to see him. Obviously a lot of times this time of the year he's not always here, similar to last year. But it was good to see him and excited to kind of spend a little bit of time to see where he's all at."

So the situation isn't settled. The Saints won't save much against the salary cap by cutting Kamara, but they could explore a trade if they don't see a future with him on the team. For his part, Kamara has expressed his openness to playing alongside Travis Etienne Jr. (the Louisiana native and former Jacksonville Jaguars first round pick signed with the Saints in free agency) and finishing his career in New Orleans. He's taken action to make that happen. Now it's on the team to follow through.
