Last year's trip to a state semifinal didn't include everything Gibsonburg wanted.
The Golden Bears did something they didn't do last season by earning a conference championship this season in the Sandusky Bay Conference River Division. Gibsonburg still plays Lakota with an opportunity to take the crown outright.
The Golden Bears lost twice to New Riegel last season, but Ava Amor drove in the game's only run in the top of the seventh to capture at least a share of the league championship.
"A league championship for our team means all the work in the season and offseason ... it was a big goal since we didn't win it last year," Amor said.

Gibsonburg (15-3, 11-1) used last season as a foundation.
"Making that big run, especially as a freshman, it was an amazing, surreal experience at Firestone Stadium with that big crowd," Amor said. "That environment was a great feeling. Everybody is excited and wants to make another run."
Amor helped the Golden Bears with her bat in the postseason, after earning first-team status at pitcher in the SBC River Division after the regular season. She suffered a hip injury that prevented her from pitching, but allowed her to hit and field.
Plus, Gibsonburg had classmate Aliv Wauford waiting to seize the role. In a reverse of fortunes, Amor again occupied the circle for much of the regular season as Wauford battled an injury.
"Coming in as a freshman, having the run we did, the biggest thing I learned is that my team has my back," Amor said. "Trusting my team. It was definitely a challenge having to adjust. I knew Aliv would be great and I could control my offense and in the field."
Wauford is healthy, including the victory over New Riegel. Amor returns to her postseason role on the left side of the infield.
Amor struck out 49 and walked seven in 41 innings in the circle, while Wauford struck out 43 and walked nine in 31 innings.
"Give everything I've got and lay it on the field," Amor said of her mindset. "Have fun with my friends."
Amor is batting .553 and Wauford drove in 15 runs in 24 at-bats. Hannah Crispen, Leah Hall and Mackenzie Muntz are also key bats.
"I've had more base hits than big home runs," Amor said. "I worked in the offseason to get those line drives every time and stay consistent. That was my biggest improvement. Our team bond has grown. We were so connected, but the team continues to grow and get better."
