Tragic news broke from the NFL on Saturday night that former San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith has died at 36, per the franchise.
No cause of death was listed for Smith, who entered the NFL in 2011 out of Missouri with San Francisco and played with the team for four seasons before stops with the Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys. He made the Pro Bowl and earned first-team All-Pro recognition for his 2012 season. He tallied 52.5 sacks in his career.
“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith," a statement from the 49ers read. Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen.
"Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”
