For the second year in a row, the Seattle Mariners are selecting a star LSU Baseball player early in the draft. The Mariners selected outfielder Jake Brown in the second round, 65th overall, on day one of the 2026 MLB Draft. This comes on the heels of Seattle selecting Kade Anderson third overall in last July's draft.

Brown came to LSU as a two-way player out of Sulphur High School. The Tigers had to sweat out a draft day decision in July of 2023 when the Texas Rangers took a flier on Brown in the 16th round, 471 overall, but Brown stood by his commitment, and now three years later leaves LSU with a national championship ring and at least a million dollars in the bank courtesy of Seattle. The slot value fo the 65th selection is $1.3 million.

Brown was the No. 1 overall player in Louisiana coming out of high school and made an impact right away. As a freshman Brown played in 56 games with 21 starts. Of those 21 starts, 12 came in centerfield, and nine came in right. Brown found his footing in postseason play, batting .286 throughout the SEC Tournament and NCAA Tournament. He doubled once, homered twice, drove in five, and scored seven runs in Hoover and Chapel Hill.

Brown took on a bigger role in 2025 though wasn't quite a full-time starter. Brown played in 64 games with 44 starts, and primarily platooned in right field with Josh Pearson. For the year, Brown batted .320 with nine doubles, two triples, eight homers, 48 RBI and 45 runs. He saved his best for Omaha, leading LSU with a .385 batting average and had a clutch two-run single in the College World Series semifinal game against Arkansas.

Brown was one of the few bright spots on an otherwise miserable 2026 season for LSU. Before having his season cut short due to a broken hamate bone, Brown was enjoying a career year: 16 homers, 49 RBI and an OPS of 1.047. He got a well-deserved curtain call on senior day from the Alex Box faithful in what proved to be the last time LSU fans saw Brown wear the purple and championship golds.

Now Brown is off to begin his professional baseball career. Per MLB's 20-80 scouting scale, Brown is a 50 overall prospect, which translates to a Major League average. Brown's power, arm, fielding, and speed are all considered above average (55 on the 20-80 scale), while his hitting tool is considered average. Hopefully Brown works his way up Seattle's system quickly and joins Kade Anderson in Double-A and then eventually the two of them make it to The Show.
