For the last four years, Al Washington has been a staple for Notre Dame football, but late Thurssday night, news broke that he’d leave South Bend for South Beach, and take over the linebacker room for the Miami Dolphins.

It was a very unexpected move, as he had just been promoted from defensive line coach to the linebackers, a position that he has plenty of experience coaching. Washington’s loss isn’t just on the field, as he was a great recruiter as well.

A move like this is never easy, and when he went to social media to say goodbye to Notre Dame, you could tell in his words the difficulty of this decision. Washington said that “Notre Dame has changed my life and career for the better… it will always be a place we call home.”

He thanked head coach Marcus Freeman as well, saying that his “example has shaped me as a coach, a leader, and a man, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity alongside you.” Washington probably didn’t expect a move this quickly, but it’s hard to pass a shot at coaching at the highest level.

We’ll be rooting for him with the Dolphins, as we know he’ll give it his all. You can reach Washington’s complete goodbye below, as we wish him the best in Miami.
