WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — It was a memorable 2026 TBT (The Basketball Tournament) debut for this year’s AfterShocks squad, as the Wichita State alumni knocked off New Mexico’s alumni team 98-77.
It didn’t take long for the Shocker alumni to get going as Morris Udeze slammed home an alley-oop from Marcus Keene for the game’s first points. Connor Frankamp followed up with a side-step three-pointer a few possessions later to put the AfterShocks up by 10.
“Mo plays at a really high level overseas. It’s not like we picked him up because he plays at the North YMCA; he knows how to play this game. He fits in seamlessly. They pay him a lot of money to play and defend at a high level, so he was just being himself,” said AfterShocks head coach Zach Bush.
Wichita State walked into the locker room with a 48-22 lead at half, largely due to the play of Marcus Keene, who made four straight three-pointers to pad a lead that already seemed insurmountable at the time.
Corey Washington put up the most points on the night with 23, narrowly missing a double-double with seven rebounds. Washington finished the night playing all 21 minutes and going 9-of-14 from the field.
QJ Peterson also came to life in the second half, finishing with 18 points, four rebounds, and going 6-of-13 from the field as he helped the AfterShocks build a 36-point lead in the third quarter. New Mexico’s squad was able to chip its way back in the game in the fourth, but the AfterShocks’ 59 points off the bench were just too much for the Enchantment to overcome.
Bush spoke on the challenges of putting a team together so quickly, but also added it helps when the roster’s chemistry is already strong and the team is cohesive.
“It’s a challenge because you want to add structure, but you’ve only got four days to do so, so there’s a balance there. You don’t want to overload them where they’re having to think more than they’re playing, but you want to give them something of a framework to play out of. It helps when their IQ is as high as it is, though,” said Bush.
The two teams will meet again on Thursday from the Roundhouse. The AfterShocks will look to take the series, while the Enchantment will try to force a winner-take-all game three on Friday night. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
