Jan. 8—JAMESTOWN — Ady Bakalar was stressed out on Thursday.
"I was nervous because you think like, 'oh we are going to win' because in the standings we are better than them," Bakalar said of how she was feeling before the Jamestown High School girl's hockey team took on Devils Lake.
"You try not to think that way but there is more pressure to beat them," she said. "Especially because we are in eighth right now, so if we would have lost we would have dropped down and yeah — it was stressful."
Jamestown's sophomore goaltender handled her nerves like a pro.
Bakalar and company picked up their fourth win of the 2025-26 hockey season defeating the winless Firebirds 4-0 to improve to 4-6-1. The girls will be back on the ice on Tuesday at Mandan. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m.
"We're happy to have the win," JHS head coach Andy Fitzgerald said. "We thought we came out a little flat, not really happy with how the first period went for us. Even though we were winning 1-0, we gave up too many opportunities and Ady kind of had to keep us in that one."
Bakalar has managed to keep the Jays in most of the games played this season.
The second-year goalie began skating when she was 2 years old. The sophomore is a 2010-born goalie. She was selected for her district to go to USA Hockey National Player Development camp last summer in Oxford, Ohio.
At the camp, Bakalar and 23 of the best 2010-born goalies in the country learned from Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) and Olympic coaches about reads, positioning, recovery speed and the mental side of hockey.
The camp — and her time spent playing with Team ND Tier 1 16U has certainly aided Bakalar — and the Jays this season.
Bakalar has made 298 saves off 334 shots faced for a .892 save percentage 11 games into the season. She has three posted shutouts and on average allows fewer than four goals per game.
"Ady has been awesome," Fitzgerald said. "She's really coming around and keeping us in games against the top of the league and then shutting them down in the bottom part of the league. She's just been solid all year and is continuing to get better."
While Bakalar was busy stopping pucks, her teammates were doing their due diligence at the other end of the ice.
The Jays got on the board first by way of a goal from Grace Allmaras at the 4:36 mark of the opening frame. Izzy Maddock added to the Jays lead with eight minutes to go in the second period.
Maddock scored again in the third, making good on assists from Oakley Lindemann and Tylea Sortland. Maddock ended the night with an assist on Brooke Dietrich's goal, scored at the 16:13 mark.
"The girls do a good job of sharing the puck," Fitzgerald said. "They are really unselfish with the puck and they get excited for each other when somebody else scores. It's good to see us working together as a team and then celebrating as a team after we score.
"We turned it on there in the second and kept it going through the third," he said. "...The girls finished the job and we'll take a 4-0 win."
