Aaron Rodgers Contract Details: How Does Return for 2026 Season Impact Steelers' QB Room? originally appeared on SportsNet Pittsburgh. Add SportsNet Pittsburgh as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The wait is finally over, Steelers fans. Aaron Rodgers is reportedly coming back to Pittsburgh for one more season.
After a drawn-out process that featured plenty of speculation and retirement rumors, the four-time MVP is expected to sign a one-year deal with the Steelers, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Once he officially puts pen to paper, Rodgers will reunite with Mike McCarthy, who served as Rodgers' coach in Green Bay for 13 seasons.

In his first season in Pittsburgh, Rodgers led the Steelers to the AFC North title and a playoff berth, throwing 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 16 games. While many fans and analysts believed a wild-card loss to the Texans would send Rodgers into retirement, the future Hall of Famer still has something left in the tank at 42 years old.
Here are the full details on the structure of Rodgers' contract.
Aaron Rodgers contract details
- Years: 1
- Value: Up to $25 million
Rodgers and the Steelers reached an agreement on a one-year deal worth up to $25 million, per Schefter. The contract is expected to include a base salary between $22 and $23 million, plus possible incentives.
While the deal still needs to officially be signed, Schefter reported that Rodgers is expected to be in attendance for Pittsburgh's voluntary OTA sessions.
Rodgers was initially given the $15 million unrestricted free agent tender, but that was considered a placeholder as he discussed the terms of a new contract with the team.
Steelers QB depth chart 2026
| Position | Player |
| Starter | Aaron Rodgers |
| 2 | Mason Rudolph |
| 3 | Will Howard |
| 4 | Drew Allar |
The Steelers now have a full quarterback room with Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and Drew Allar behind Rodgers on the depth chart. Pittsburgh could keep all four quarterbacks, but as ESPN's Brooke Pryor noted, McCarthy has never entered Week 1 with four quarterbacks on the active roster.
Rudolph has plenty of experience as a backup QB with 19 career starts, including 14 with the Steelers. While Rudolph, who will turn 31 years old in July, is a known commodity, it's difficult to imagine a scenario in which he makes a leap this late in his career.
Howard and Allar provide intrigue as projects for McCarthy, but neither QB has taken a snap in an NFL game.
A sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Howard missed the entire 2025 preseason because of a hand injury, and he never jumped ahead of Rodgers and Rudolph on the depth chart. Allar, who was selected in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, is undoubtedly talented, but McCarthy is essentially starting from scratch with his mechanics.
If Pittsburgh wants to drop one quarterback before the start of the 2026 season, either Rudolph or Howard would likely be the odd man out. Rodgers will be the starter, and the Steelers aren't going to give up on Allar immediately after selecting him with a valuable draft pick.
