GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) — For new Green Bay YMCA Swim Team head coach Alec Jeffers, the journey to leading the program feels like the natural next step in a lifetime spent around the pool.
Jeffers, a Bay Port High School graduate and former standout swimmer at UW-Stevens Point, was introduced to the sport at a young age by his father, Steve, who spent years coaching the Bay Port High School swim team.
“When I was coaching high school, when he was probably 10 or 12 years old, he was always by my side,” Steve Jeffers said. “He always wanted to help with lineups and matchups against other teams.”
That passion carried Alec through a decorated collegiate swimming career.
While competing at UW-Stevens Point, he established himself as one of the program’s top athletes and still holds the pool record in the 200-yard backstroke.

“When he graduated and left Point, there was a hole in the team that just couldn’t be filled,” UW-Stevens Point head swim coach Al Boelk said. “He’s one of those guys that you don’t realize how much you’re going to miss until they’re gone.”
After graduating, Alec began exploring coaching opportunities, quickly realizing he had a passion for helping young athletes develop both in and out of the pool.
“I really like trying to see kids reach their full potential,” Alec Jeffers said. “And the joy that it brings when they eventually do.”
Alec later joined the Ferguson Family YMCA in downtown Green Bay as an assistant swim coach. And, not long after joining the staff, the head coaching position opened up, and the timing was right for him to take the next step.
And this next bit here you can’t make up: Back in the day, Alec’s father, Steve, swam for the same YMCA program.
“It’s one of those things in life that went full circle,” Steve said. “I never expected it and never really thought it was a possibility.”
Now, Alec Jeffers begins his head coaching career in the same community and at the same pool that helped shape both his and his father’s love for the sport — a full-circle moment years in the making.
