76ers get LeBron James update, and it has to do with Tyrese Maxey originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
After the Philadelphia 76ers traded for Jaylen Brown, it seemed like the organization was planning on doing something else.
The 76ers are obviously trying to win a championship these days after making that move and have a real opportunity to do so, depending on how they look health-wise. The 76ers, one of the better teams, at least on paper, will have a real opportunity to win a championship if Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey can stay on the court with Brown.
That's really the only big question Philadelphia has to answer at this point.
However, there's a LeBron James question that has to be answered, as many suggest he's intrigued by what Philadelphia can offer. According to the latest, the reason might be Maxey, as crazy as that might have sounded a few years ago, when he wasn't the superstar talent he is today.
“Maxey is someone James has long admired as a player and a person, and that admiration is mutual. But, contract-wise, the 76ers are down to handing out a veteran’s minimum. There are some things they can do with the roster to scratch out a bit more space, but it won’t be much. Obviously, James is going to play this season at a discount. But a veteran’s minimum deal would represent the ultimate financial sacrifice, and there has to be some skepticism that he would willingly go that far in the opposite direction when it comes to money,” Tony Jones wrote.
There's no debate that Maxey is a special talent, but to hear that James wants to play with him and has shown interest in doing so in the past really goes to show the type of player he's becoming in Philadelphia.
It'll be interesting to see if that's part of the selling point, too, but I have some thoughts that it won't come down to that alone.
