PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia 76ers star big man Joel Embiid once again went through an injury-marred season in 2025-26. The 2023 MVP winner was limited to only 38 games due to a variety of issues from his bothersome left knee to a right oblique strain to an emergency appendectomy, but he was hugely productive in those games averaging 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists.
Embiid then returned from the appendectomy early to help Philadelphia rally from a 3-1 deficit to eliminate the Boston Celtics in Round 1 of the playoffs. He averaged 28.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 7.0 assists in the four games he was able to play in that series. He looked like he was healthy and that was a huge component of his game as he entered the offseason.
Embiid has been in the gym working out and preparing for what's to come in the 2026-27 season with all of the new pieces around him. Coach Nick Nurse joined "Takeoff with John Clark" and gave his thoughts on Embiid's summer:
President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey has also noticed the work Embiid has put in. Speaking after Jaylen Brown's introductory press conference on Thursday, Gansey gave an update on Embiid and how he's looked.
"He's just been himself, man," Gansey said of Embiid. "I mean, I remember when I got the job, I went over there and he's like, 'I want to have a great year. I want to play a lot of games. I want to be back to All-NBA Joel.' He talked the talk and now he’s walking the walk. He’s lost some weight. You saw the pictures. He's been in the gym. He's lifting. So, he's doing all the right things, and he's super motivated."
The Sixers were able to land the likes of Jaylen Brown and LeBron James to join their talented roster, but at the end of the day, whatever success the team has might come down to how healthy Embiid is. The big fella is set to enter his 11th season playing and is desperately looking to get over the hump in the Eastern Conference.

Joel is still unbelievably talented, right? He looks fantastic, by the way. He's having a great summer, probably for the first time in a couple summers. He's in shape and he's active and he’s feeling much better to get out on the floor and to get in the weight room and stuff like that, and he's still a great offensive hub, etc...Listen, nice to have some new additions that have the pedigree that they do, and let's get them all blended together.
