We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Friday, July 10, is 65 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 65 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 1965 season for the Cardinals.
The 1965 season started out well and then was disastrous. They lost the opener 34-27 to the Philadelphia Eagles but then rattled off four straight wins to improve to 4-1. They won only one other time, losing their final six games to finish the year 5-9.
They averaged 21.1 points per game, seventh in the league out of 14 teams. They gave up 22.1 per game, ninth in the league.
The Cardinals had eight Pro Bowlers in 1965:
Charley Johnson went 5-6 in 11 starts and passed for 2,439 yards, 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
Bill Triplett led the team with 617 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Willie Crenshaw added 437 rushing yards.
Bobby Joe Conrad led the team with 58 catches and 909, scoring five touchdowns. Randle led with nine touchdowns, catching 51 passes for 845 yards. Tight end Jackie Smith had 41 receptions for 648 yards and two scores.
Bakken led the NFL with a 67.7% field goal percentage.
Wilson led the defense with six interceptions. Cornerback Jimmy Burson added five and Fischer had three.
